LIGHTHOUSE ALL STARS / JUNE CHRISTY - JIMMY GIUFFRE THREE / NELLIE LUTCHER

Side one of Calliope CAL 3035 presented audio from the Stars of Jazz show broadcast on March 3, 1958 featuring Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All Stars with guest vocalist June Christy. Side two repeated audio from the January 7, 1957 Stars of Jazz program featuring the Jimmy Giuffre Three plus Nellie Lutcher that was released on Calliope CAL 3012.  The production script for the March 3, 1958 show is missing from the Jimmie Baker archive, the production script for the January 7, 1957 show can be viewed at our entry for CAL 3012.

Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All Stars would appear on Stars of Jazz three times.  This was their second appearance.  Howard Rumsey had recently signed with Liberty Records and had three albums available in the Liberty Lighthouse Series: DOUBLE OR NOTHIN’ (LRP-3045), TENORS HEAD-ON (LRP-3051) and DRUMMIN’ THE BLUES (LRP-3064).  Covers of the three Liberty albums would be displayed for viewers and promoted by Bobby Troup.

June Christy would also appear on Stars of Jazz three times with this being her second appearance as well. June Christy had recently recorded two albums for Capitol Records with Pete Rugolo, JUNE -- FAIR AND WARMER (T833) and GONE FOR THE DAY (T902). Prior to introducing June Christy performing THAT’S ALL, Bobby Troup held up GONE FOR THE DAY for the camera and commented on the next tune that June would sing, THAT’S ALL, from her MISTY MISS CHRISTY album for Capitol.  June’s first number on the program, I WANT TO BE HAPPY, was from her JUNE -- FAIR AND WARMER album.
