BUDDY DE FRANCO / LUCY ANN POLK - ART PEPPER / PAM RUSSELL

The Stars of Jazz television series was well documented by Los Angeles area photographers.  Ray Avery recalled that there were usually four or five photographers attending each program.  The producers welcomed their participation and the June 10, 1957 program featured a presentation of their still photos and introduced several of the photographer “regulars” to the TV audience.  Regular visitors to this blog will have noticed that we have featured the photography of Ray Avery, courtesy of CTSIMAGES, who probably attended more of the programs than any of the other photographers who shot the series.  A collection of Ray Avery’s photos of the Stars of Jazz series was published by the Danish publishing house, JazzMedia ApS, in 1998.  It can be purchased from CTSIMAGES, the jazz photography licensing enterprise that represents Ray Avery’s photography as well as other internationally known jazz photographers.  It is out of print, and the remaining scarce copies can be purchased from CTSIMAGES by following the link below:

The shooting script for Stars of Jazz program #7 was not among Jimmie Baker’s collection of scripts and thus we are not able to present it for this examination of music from that program.  As noted by Bobby Troup in his introductory comments in the audio sample below, Buddy DeFranco had recently appeared at Zardi’s Jazzland along with the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
