CAL TJADER / SHERLI SONDERS - CHICO HAMILTON / GEORGIA CARR

Many of the songbirds that appeared on the Stars of Jazz television series had established their careers on recordings.  Such was the case with Sherli Sonders who had two recordings with the Ken Hanna Orchestra, THE BRIGHT NEW ORCHESTRA on Trend TL 1007, and on the Capitol “Kenton Presents” series, JAZZ FOR DANCERS, Capitol T6512.  The photo below from the Howard Lucraft Collection (courtesy CTSIMAGES) was taken at the Capitol Records recording session.

We have included two audio samples for the Chico Hamilton portion of Calliope CAL 3011.  The first is from the AFRTS transcription of the December 24, 1956 program with the quintet performing “Jingle Bells” as the opening background music.  This clip includes Bobby Troup reading a West Coast Jazz version of “The Night Before Christmas” – perhaps corny, but amusing.  The second clip is an interview with Chico Hamilton that was taped before Chico had formed the quintet that is heard on side two of CAL 3011.  Chico talks about his time with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and his new recording on Pacific Jazz featuring his trio with Howard Roberts and George Duvivier.

Our media presentation is from TV RADIO LIFE, May 24, 1958.
